Ongoing product engineering
Senior engineering ownership for an important product and backlog.
Add experienced product engineering capacity without first recruiting and managing a full internal engineering team. LCR works directly with your decision-makers to plan, build, release and improve the software your business depends on.
When ongoing product engineering fits
This engagement fits an established business with software already central to customers, revenue or operations, and more valuable work than its internal engineering capacity can reliably own. The need may be a continuing backlog, a product that has outgrown its first release, or a business model that depends on software without justifying a larger permanent team yet.
If the outcome has a clear finish and can be scoped as one delivery phase, a defined product build may fit better. Software companies and consultancies with a temporary delivery gap can use the technical delivery partner model.
What LCR can own
LCR can carry technical context from a business requirement through architecture, implementation, integration, verification and production release. The exact boundary is agreed for the product rather than implied by a generic retainer.
- Turn business priorities into a workable technical sequence.
- Make and record architecture and implementation decisions.
- Build, review and release product improvements.
- Coordinate integrations, data changes and operational dependencies.
- Keep technical risks, blocked decisions and next actions visible.

A working rhythm with visible priorities
The client names one person who can set priorities and make business decisions. LCR maintains the agreed delivery view, works through the highest-value ready items and demonstrates working outcomes as they become available. Capacity and expectations are agreed explicitly; an ongoing engagement does not mean every request becomes urgent or arrives without trade-offs.
AI development tools may assist research, implementation and verification. LCR remains responsible for reviewing the work and for the engineering decisions that reach production.
Roadmap development, maintenance and incident support are different responsibilities
Ongoing product engineering centres on planned product and technical progress. Routine dependency work, defects and operational improvements can be prioritised inside the agreed capacity. Service-desk response times, after-hours availability and emergency incident support need a separate explicit agreement when the business requires them.
This boundary protects both delivery and reliability: planned work remains visible, while operational obligations have named owners and realistic response expectations.
Start with the product and the responsibility gap
Bring the current product, the next meaningful outcomes, the backlog if one exists, and the systems or suppliers involved. LCR will help determine whether the work needs an ongoing relationship, a defined initial phase or a narrower discovery step.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Is ongoing product engineering the same as maintenance?
No. The engagement is built around a prioritised product or technical roadmap. Maintenance and production support can be planned within that capacity, but they do not automatically include an unlimited service desk or round-the-clock incident response.
Does the client still need a product owner?
Yes. A client decision-maker still sets business priorities, resolves policy questions and accepts outcomes. LCR reduces day-to-day engineering supervision and owns the technical delivery within the agreed capacity.
Can the engagement work with an existing team?
Yes. Responsibilities, repositories, review expectations and release authority are agreed at the start so LCR can own a workstream without creating ambiguity for the existing team.
