AI channel comparison
WhatsApp vs web vs voice AI agents: which channel fits?
Choose the channel that helps people complete the task and check the result. Start with one useful journey and a clear route to human help.
Match the first channel to the work
WhatsApp can suit short, ongoing enquiries where customers already use messaging. A web experience can suit structured forms, document review and authenticated account work. Voice can suit spoken intake or hands-busy situations where the user can hear, correct and confirm the exchange.
These are starting points, not a universal ranking. Validate the choice with the intended users, their devices, access needs and working environment. The same underlying task may start in one channel and finish in another.
The channel does not decide whether you need an agent. Use the chatbot, workflow and agent decision guide before introducing variable tool selection.
Compare the same customer journey
| Decision factor | Web | Voice | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural starting task | Short enquiries and follow-up | Structured requests and visual review | Spoken intake and guided questions |
| Reviewing detail | Readable messages; long exchanges need care | Space for tables, documents and change previews | Read-back helps; detailed evidence may need a screen |
| Identity | A number is not authority for every record | Can use an authenticated account journey | A caller needs appropriate verification |
| Environment | Requires a usable messaging connection | Depends on browser, layout and connectivity | Noise, privacy and turn-taking matter |
| Recovery | Continue a case through messages or handover | Show saved state and correction controls | Offer repetition, transfer and another channel |
On a small screen, scroll the table sideways. Keyboard users can focus the table region and use the arrow keys. Test the complete journey, including corrections and failure, rather than comparing demonstration replies.
Use messaging with a real receiving workflow
WhatsApp can provide a familiar entry point for service questions, request details and progress updates. Keep messages concise and connect them to a case the team can find. Do not rely on the conversation alone as the operating record.
The WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy governs opt-in, templates and escalation. Replies without templates are permitted within the stated 24-hour window after the last user message; outside that window, approved templates are required. Recheck the current terms and the actual business use before launch.
Use a secure alternative when a request needs protected information or detailed confirmation. Read WhatsApp AI capabilities for the workflow and channel boundaries.
Give complex work room to be understood
A web interface can show structured fields, source documents, status and a proposed action together. That can help when a person must compare information, upload material or correct a record before confirming.
Account access still needs deliberate design; a web page is not secure merely because it has a login screen. Keep record permissions and execution checks in the application. Preserve partially completed work where appropriate and show whether submission succeeded.
For consequential submissions, W3C’s error-prevention guidance provides useful criteria for review and correction. Consider a client portal when the journey extends beyond a conversation into ongoing account work.
Design for mishearing and interruption
A spoken journey can reduce typing, but it removes the convenient visual record during the exchange. Test names, reference numbers, pauses, accents, background noise and a user changing their mind. Provide a way to repeat, correct, stop and reach a person.
Read back material details before the agreed action, and offer a written confirmation or secure visual step when that better supports understanding. Do not assume speech recognition quality from a quiet developer demonstration.
Decide whether audio or transcripts are retained, why they are needed and who can access them. Have the responsible owners review notices and handling for the intended workflow. Offer an alternative for people who cannot or prefer not to use voice.
Pilot one complete path before adding channels
Hypothetical choice: a field-service enquiry starts with a short message. Staff then request a structured site specification through a web form. A shared case reference prevents the customer from repeating the background. Voice is added later only if user evidence supports it.
Compare total operating cost: channel or supplier usage, model calls, hosting, integrations, testing and human follow-up. Estimate against a representative journey with the delivery team. Avoid declaring one channel cheapest before understanding usage and support.
Keep shared case state and business permissions consistent across channels using the workflow architecture guide. Plan human handover and use LCR’s AI-agent offering to discuss the smallest useful first release.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Which AI agent channel is best?
Choose according to the task and users. Messaging can suit short ongoing enquiries, web can support structured visual work, and voice can suit spoken intake with reliable correction and handover.
Can all channels use the same agent workflow?
They can share task state and controlled operations while using different interfaces. Identity, consent, message handling and confirmation must still be designed for each channel.
Is a WhatsApp number enough to access an account?
No. Apply the verification and record permissions appropriate to the requested operation. Possession of a messaging number is not blanket authorisation.
Which channel costs least?
Estimate the complete journey with the team, including supplier usage, model calls, integrations, testing and human handling. There is no universal lowest-cost choice.
